I often get asked, "What is the best website platform to use for...?" or "Why should I use WordPress?" or any of several other questions about choosing the right website platform. Some people actually ask, "Why do I need a website anyway?" and "Isn't facebook good enough?" Robert Plank is an internet marketer who specializes in WordPress plugins, copywriting, and making money online. I guess he is a little like me. He recently asked this question of people on his mailing list, "What are you using to run your website?". Below is my email response to that question.

WordPress Content Management System CMS Website

I have several websites for my own businesses (I earn my entire living online) and create websites for selected clients. First, your "none" option above isn't really an option at all. A website is the foundation of one's online presence. Without one you are at risk of losing your business to a a thoughtless action taken, or a bottom-line financial decision made, on a whim by the owner of whatever social media or other platform(s) you are using to underpin your online activity.

I have been building websites since early 1994, just months after the World Wide Web was rolled out and when the total number of websites on the Internet could actually still be counted. I have used most of the major website builders over the nearly 30 years I've been doing this, including most of the online solutions like Squarespace, Wix, and Weebly. And I have hand coded everything from small personal blogs -- my first blog, my own, was started in 1996, long before the term was even coined and WordPress and Blogger were not yet even a dream -- to large multi-vendor selling sites, membership sites, and large corporate platforms. I know a little bit about websites.

I haven't done it all, but I have done a pot full. I can say confidently, without a doubt, WordPress is the best choice I have found for almost any website requirement. If it can't be built with WordPress there is a likelihood the site developer really doesn't know what they are doing, or it can't be built at all! There are other reasonably good alternate choices out there, hundreds of them in fact, but I have found there are a lot of good reasons why WordPress represents a little over 60% of the content management system (CMS) website market and roughly 25% of all websites currently online.
When you look at market share for the top 100 CMS offerings (https://w3techs.com/technologies/history_overview/content_management) and realize that only the top 11 have 1% or more (WordPress has 61.5% as of October this year) you have to figure some of those 60+% know what they are doing. If only 10% of the WordPress share (6.15% of the total market share) actually understand why WordPress is the better choice, then that is more than ALL of those using the second choice!

Some numbers. Some website package. And, did I mention it is free?
