We all have different paths toward success. For some, their paths may be paved. For others, they may need to walk on mud and rocks just to get to their destination. The point is that no two paths are the same.
Even if you share the same dream with another person, your paths will still be determined by the collective sum of your experiences, your skills, your talents, and so many other factors.
So, how do you find your own path to success?
Well, the first thing you need to do is to define your goals. And when defining your goals, you can’t just say, ‘you want to become a successful businessperson by the time you turn 30.’
What kind of business are you going to have? How would you know you’ve achieved success?
Setting goals are more than just saying a random string of words. If you want a visible path to success, you’re going to have to make sure your goals meet the SMART criteria. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound.
If your goal isn’t SMART, then you need to go back to the drawing board. You need to have the right plan in place, so you don’t waste time chasing about random goals that are not going to bring you any closer to your dreams. You’ll be wasting a huge chunk of your time if you don’t invest the time necessary to craft and define a SMART goal.
When you’ve got your SMART goal in place, it will be much easier for you to come up with a plan of action. You can have milestones in place. You can break it down further into daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, and so on.
When you organize your goals, and you’ve planned for any contingencies which may arise, then it’s entirely possible you may reach your goal in a much shorter timeframe.
Make sure you track and record your performance. It’s important you know exactly where you’re at and how far you’ve got to go until you reach the finish line. You may feel like your progress is slow, but that’s perfectly alright. Progress is progress after all.
However, if you’re stagnating and you're not moving forward, then you need to reassess and recalibrate your goals to make sure you’re still following the right path.
