Intelligent, reasoning, and indeed reasonable, people who wish to discover more about the way that the world works, or to have a structure of understanding on which to hang their interpretations of the way that the world works, can use any method, any text, and any symbology. In fact this is required of us as thinking and rational people. We, as humans, being the most highly intellectually, and technically, advanced beings on the face of this planet, are, in my estimation, under the burden of a required level of continued learning. Whether we choose to use structures that are recent and part and parcel of the 20th and 21st century science, or some structures that are centuries old, is up to us. If our faculties of reasoning and understanding are sufficiently developed, for instance, there is no reason why we should not take a set of objects, often seen to be used by "strange people", and under the light of reasoning, with a questioning and rational mind, use them for our purposes.
As such the Tarot, a set of possibly pre medieval playing cards, could be used either for the purposes of contemplation, or investigation, of the emotional, the life path, social and psychological interactions, or the actual, or seemingly actual, spiritual worlds, and with no contradiction to our own faiths or cultures whatsoever.
There are many different levels and depths to the process of tarot reading, but for the most part, one can say that the purposes of the diviner is to provide information, a guided story that relates to the enquirers question. I am not going to discuss the psychic levels of tarot reading here.
But by example, suppose a salesman was to get on the phone to pitch to a blue chip managing director or CEO. What would be his purpose? To give information, a story to the client. He or she would have a pitch script in front of him, but instead of reading each word verbatem to the client, the salesman would refer briefly to the paragraphs and use his skill of speech and skill of explanation as well as his sensitivity to the personality and character type that he or she was talking to so as to express the story of the sale pitch script. This is, in many ways, similar (and in some rare reading situations, identical) to the work of the tarot reader.
After having spent time (could be days weeks months or years) studying the meanings of the tarot, the intricate depths of symbolism and the correlations to aspects of the life path, the psyche and social and psychological dynamics, and in particular, states of mood, as well as having read the "book of life" through study of, and thinking about, life, the tarot reader is ready to begin a consultation.
The client typically gets on the phone or Internet with the reader, the enquirer gives the reader the first question, the reader then designs a "spread" being a layout of the cards that best describes the situation around he question, and then just like a skilled media salesman, he or she then relates back to the enquirer the story that seems to be described by the tarot spread. Thus the service of the tarot reader is provided.
So whats the point? Why bother to see a reader? That I will have to leave up to you, but most humans need to have some reflection on their life, to get a different perspective and sometimes even corroboration of their own assumptions so as to better understand their position in life. Although it is true that counselors do provide this, most people feel more at ease in an informal consultation with a reader than with a counselor and there are even some things that a counselor is not good for.
If, for instance, you are in business and you have a few deals in the pipeline and you wanted to get a different point of view as to where the clients were at, an anonymous and informal conversation with an experienced reader can really help.
