There is a new player in the CMS marketplace and it is pitting an established warrior against the proverbial upstart. This is no David vs. Goliath, however. When it comes to WordPress vs October this really isn't even a comparison yet. Maybe it will be some day.
The October CMS
Here's the link to the October CMS Home Page.
When you click the link above and go to the October CMS page you will read about the features and benefits of the system that makes it sound not only like the best thing since sliced bread, but also the fastest growing "best" choice of a significant number of users.
Let's be honest here; at just over 100,000 installations, this is a start up program that may or may not survive in a very crowded, and very focused, market place. It barely registers on any measurement scale of competitive CMS brands.
The October CMS may be new, may have great new features, may even be technically better than the market leaders, but if you are serious about building a successful online presence to you want to hitch your star to a minimally supported, and even lesser accepted, wannabe?
Sure, WordPress could once be described in those very words. And back then, I rejected WordPress too. It just wasn't ready for prime time. Neither is October; at least not for those of us looking for quality, function, availability, and support. We just can't risk our business success on our CMS choice.
It's All In The Numbers
Let's look at those numbers. Here is the percentage of market share (rounded to the nearest whole number) for the top five (5) CMS platforms available today (July 2016):
- WordPress 60%
- Joomla 6%
- Drupal 5%
- Magento 3%
- Blogger 3%
Only the first twelve (12) entries on the top 100 list even make the 1% or greater mark. At .01% -- that's point zero one percent -- October doesn't even make that list at all.
Most of the entries on the top 100 CMS list are names you wouldn't recognize anyway. Of the ones you might, you may be surprised how little market share they actually have. Shopify, osCommerce, ZenCart, and even Google Sites are all less than 1%.
So, at 60% of the CMS market, WordPress is the undisputed leader. It is currently under full open source development, offers the best available core system for general use, and the richest range of options in themes, plugins, and service choices.
WordPress vs. October CMS
There may be good reasons for choosing a CMS other than WordPress but if you are doing so you really should be able to articulate those reasons, fully understand why you are making that choice, and know how your choice is going to impact you going forward.
For your business, it could be the choice of a lifetime -- and certainly one that seals the success or failure of your livelihood. Consider it well.
