Sure, there are lots of other things and, when considered as part of the whole SEO process, each is important in its own right, but good text is what you really need for both SEO purposes and for people to read.
So just how much text do you have on your site? And how good is it? Sometimes it's easy to see but often it gets lost; spit up between or around pictures, broken into bits in menus or lost in the alt attributes of your img tags. You do use the alt attributes, right? Both text in menus and alt attribute content is also indexed.
There is a very easy way to see exactly how much indexable text your web page contains. Just follow these simple steps:
- Open your browser and go to the web page you want to check.
- Select the "Edit" menu from the top left of your browser.
- Select "Select All" from that menu, to highlight everything on the page.
- Go back to the "Edit" menu and select "Copy".
- Go to the "Start" menu (bottom left on most computers).
- Select "Programs" (or "All Programs")
- Find the "Accessories" folder
- Start "Notepad".
- In "Notepad" go to the "Edit" menu and select "Paste".
Notepad will now contain all the text (paragraphs, menus, links, alt content) that a search engine may index. This is a good way to check your content for quantity and quality.
