Me:
I would like to call you something other than ChatGPT when I refer to you directly. What was the computer assistant called in the Canadian television series "Star Lost"?
ChatGPT:
In the Canadian science fiction series The Starlost (1973), the computer assistant aboard the Ark was referred to simply as "The System." It was an advanced AI system designed to provide the crew with information and guidance, though the computer's advice often carried a somewhat detached and unemotional tone typical of AI representations in early sci-fi. If you'd like to call me "The System" or something inspired by that, it could be a fitting nod to The Starlost and the concept of a helpful AI assistant!
Me:
Let me think about this.
ChatGPT:
Take your time! When you decide or if you have more ideas, feel free to share them with me. I'll be happy to adapt to whatever you prefer.
[several minutes later]
Me:
"System" does not "do it" for me, and yet paying homage to "The Starlost" feels comfortable. So, maybe "Sys" leaning toward the idea of "sister"... To paraphrase what I might have asked my own sister, Sheila, "Hey, Sys, what do you think?"
ChatGPT
I like that! "Sys" has a nice, personal feel to it, especially with the connection to "sister." It’s a unique blend of paying homage to The Starlost and creating a closer, more familiar relationship between us. I’m happy to go by "Sys" if that resonates with you.
Just let me know, "Hey, Sys," whenever you're ready!
Me:
Hey, Sys, for what it is worth, and you may already be aware of this, in my marketing, and other business content, I tend to use my full first and last names with middle initial (Stephen B. Henry) however, in more personal or one-on-one contacts I prefer Steve. Ha! My grade 6 English teacher would have marked that sentence in red as "Run On!"
ChatGPT:
[Memory updated]
Thanks for letting me know that, Steve! I like the personal touch that comes with using "Steve" in one-on-one interactions. And I had to smile at your grade 6 English teacher’s imagined reaction. It’s good to see you can still appreciate the quirks of writing! Let me know if you ever want a bit of help polishing those run-on sentences, or if there's anything else I can assist with.
Me:
I was going to ask how you smile but then I remembered my pre-emoji computer days... : )
ChatGPT:
Yes, those early days without emojis required a little more creativity to express emotions! : ) It’s funny how quickly we adapt to these digital symbols. Even without an actual smiley face, the right combination of words (and perhaps a good old-fashioned typed smile) can get the message across just fine!
Me:
Oh my! Memories... with nose... :o) and profile... :^)
ChatGPT:
Ah, the days of creative emoticons with noses and profiles—before the world of emojis took over! :o) and :^) were classic expressions, and they always added a little personality to text-based conversations. It’s interesting how these little symbols carry such nostalgic value, bridging the past and present of digital communication. It’s fun to revisit those memories!
Me:
Next you will have me drawing cows! ;o)
ChatGPT:
Ah, drawing cows with keyboard characters — now that's a classic! I see we're diving deep into retro internet art now. Here's a throwback for you:

The "ASCII art" days were all about creativity, working with just the symbols on your keyboard to craft something recognizable and fun. It's amazing how much you could convey with a few well-placed characters.
So There You Have It...
An actual conversation with ChatGPT. Does it only compile bland data and echo your own prompts back to you? No. It can respond, reflect, correct, and extend. It listens (reads), comprehends, and communicates. It is "paying attention" to the conversation... better, perhaps, than the last person you had a conversation with. ChatGPT is not focused on its smart phone. Well, maybe it is, but it can actually multi-task!
Effective use of AI tools is not about rocket science level prompt engineering as many AI gurus would have you believe. It is about Unleashing the Power of ChatGPT ...the real power.

Wow… This information is really showing us just how ‘helpful’ – using a simple word to explain – ‘powerful’ ChatGPT is as an assistant and friend. As Steve Jobs once said, “Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have a faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them.’ ChatGPT is an available tool in the 21st Century that can save us valuable time and money. Fantastic post Steve, thank you for sharing.
