Michiel Heijmans, writing for the Yoast Blog has updated and republished his post on How To Clean Up Your Site Structure. In his new lead-in, he addresses the nature of the post and the situation that affects so many of our websites:

We all know that moment where your website has grown to this monstrous collection of pages. That moment when you realize that you have too many pages in your menu and the coherence of your website is nowhere to be found. And we also know what a struggle it is to clean this mess up."

From Chaos To Order: Your Menu

It opens the door to the first section of the post, subtitled, "From chaos to order: your menu" which deals with the obvious, your menu. Mentioning breadcrumbs and stressing the standard Home -- Contact (first and last) typical menu items, the article speaks to the relevance of menu items.

Optimizing Your Site Structure

Building upon the menu concept the article goes on to dig deeper into optimizing your site structure and provides some key guidelines that includes visualizing, and then writing down, a complete diagram of your website structure. This could be the basis for an on-going living document that grows along with your website.

The article goes on to deal with removing, and redirecting, pages and rethinking your taxonomies. The author stresses the importance of what could turn into a lengthly process and recommends you "don't take it lightly". He wraps up with the reminder to resubmit your site to Google after the changes.
