Here are three important points about choosing a selling site and selling online:

  1. You need to consider the product nature or theme of the site. Some sites take on a reputation for certain product lines by plan or by practice over time. You want to be sure you fit in.
  2. On most sites you will need to be prepared to list a significant number of items -- probably at least 100 -- if you expect to sell regularly. Think about going into a grocery store with only a dozen products to choose from, or a shoe store with only six pairs of shoes. A limited number of available items is, in many cases, akin to empty shelves in a real-world store.
  3. You need to promote your store. Whether it's on a selling site, or your own stand-alone website, and no matter how much the site promotes themselves, YOU are the only one who can really promote YOUR business. If you don't, you are cheating yourself.

If your business is just a hobby and you don't care if you sell or not then all of this is meaningless. But if you are serious about building a successful business there are a number of key factors that you must attend to in order to move forward on that journey of success.
